Pregnancy causes many changes in the body, especially in the abdomen. The ability of the abdomen to 'rebound' after childbirth decreases with each delivery. The typical patient who presents for abdominal contouring complains of extra skin, extra fat, a stretched or loose abdominal wall, stretch marks, and/or poor lower abdominal skin quality. Some patients complain that they can't see their belly button and others that their clothes don't fit properly. The abdominoplasty or tummy tuck procedure addresses all of these issues.
LL is a 32 year old mother of two beautiful children and after completing their family, she and her husband sought to seek our help in restoring LL's pre-pregnancy figure. In August 2006, she underwent an abdominoplasty and had an uneventful recovery. She was thrilled with the results you can see here. Her post-operative photos are shown at 4 months following surgery.
The abdominoplasty is completed through an incision made across the lower abdomen in an area that is usually covered by undergarments, typically at a level similar to a c-section scar. Through this incision, most of the abdominal wall is exposed. With pregnancy, the paired 'washboard' or rectus abdominus muscles typically separate from each other (horizontal excess) and lengthen (vertical excess). Sit-ups and other exercises may strengthen the muscles but no amount of sit-ups can bring the abdominal wall back into its normal, unstretched position. During the abdominoplasty operation, these muscles are plicated, or tightened, with sutures. The rectus muscles are visibly closer together and have better form. This achieves a flatter and tighter abdominal wall.
Next, the excess skin and fat is removed. Usually, this results in removal of all of the skin and fat between the belly button and the incision. This discarded skin tends to contain most or all of the stretch marks and often is inelastic and of poor quality. The upper abdominal skin, which is usually of better quality, more elastic and with fewer stretch marks, is stretched to the lower incision. Contouring the abdominal tissue to give the impression of a well toned abdominal wall adds artistry to the operation. Finally, the belly button is recreated in ideal position.

After literally years of waiting, the FDA has finally given clearance for aesthetic usage of Perlane®. Perlane® is a complimentary product to Restylane®, both are hyaluronic acid gels used for facial rejuvenation. The advantage to Perlane® is that it is a bigger molecule and therefore provides greater degree of correction to deeper lines and wrinkles, typically the lines that forms between the cheeks and mouth area. Perlane® can also be used to add volume to the cheeks and even fill the troughs below the lower eyelids. The procedure can be performed with topical anesthesia only or supplemented with dental style blocks. This safe, versatile product adds a needed tool in our armamentarium for facial rejuvenation. Our staff is fully trained and well versed in both Perlane® and Restylane®, and we are pleased to accept appointments for both at this time.

Both Drs. Kaufman and Clark are committed to making the world a better place, and frequently participate in volunteer surgery trips to the developing world. This year Dr. Kaufman and a team of physicians and nurses traveled to Leyte, Philippines to provide free surgical services to children in need. During the trip, lead by Medical Missions for Children, the team operated on 56 children and performed life changing cleft lip and palate surgery. The childrens' ages ranged from just a few months to 16 years old. Almost all the work was on previously uncorrected craniofacial deformities. In most cases, after only a 2 hour surgery, the childrens' faces could smile normally and provide them the hope for a normal life. To get a sense of the trip, please enjoy a few snapshots of the trip!
