People have always cared about how they look, but it’s not like it used to be. The spread of technology and media has greatly amplified our preoccupation with self-image. We’re more aware than ever the power and influence our body image can have on those around us.
Here are some famous breast moments in (recent) TV history.
House M.D. (episode: The Right Stuff)
If you’ve never watched House before, the premise is that Dr. House, a genius doctor, and his team of helper doctors are allowed by the New Jersey hospital they work for to do whatever they want without serious reprecussion while they spend a long time helping only one patient for reasons never adequately explained. Any trouble that arrives is quickly diverted by Dr. House’s acerbic tongue and cowboy attitude. This results in countless entertaining (albethey wholly unbelieveable) chains of events with unexpected twists and turns.
In a 2007 epsiode, Dr. House was trying to figure out what was wrong with his patient, a US Air Force Pilot. After having a few drinks, House concludes that he needs a lung biopsy from his patient. His patient objects on the basis that having any surgical scars indicting physical abnormality would disqualify her from her dream of becoming an astronaut.
Dr. Taub, the plastic surgeon character, suggests giving her breast implants to provide her with an excuse for her lung surgery scars that won’t preclude her from joining NASA. Crisis averted. Plastic surgery saves the day.
The Office (episode: The Job)
Michael Scott, Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin, and the undisputed king of making everyone around him feel incredibly uncomfortable, finally separated with his domineering girlfriend and former boss Jan Levinson in 2007.
Jan must have had a change of heart because she arrived back at the office with a surprise for Michael. While in the middle of fending her off and telling her that he never wanted to see her again, she unbuttoned her jacket, revealing her new large breasts.
Here’s a basic recap of their conversation:
Before seeing Jan’s breast implants
Jan: Sorry for dropping by unexpectedly. I tried calling, but I kept getting voicemail.
Michael: Weird! Yeah.. I didn’t get both of your messages.
After seeing Jan’s breast implants
Michael: “Let’s get back together.”
Fans of the show will also remember Creed, the creepy old guy in the office. What’s Creed’s take on breast implants?
“I find it offensive. Au naturale baby, that’s how I like ’em… Swing low sweet chariots.”
Seinfeld (episode: The Implant)
“And by the way, they’re real- and they’re spectacular.”
In 1993, the legendary comedy show Seinfeld hit on the topic of cosmetic surgery when Jerry dumped a girlfriend (played by Teri Hatcher, coincidentally) because he thought that her amazing figure was the result of breast implants, thanks to a tip from Elaine. Later, in the sauna, Elaine tripped and accidentally grabbed the girlfriend’s breasts, discovering that they were in fact real. When she told Jerry this, he was dubious, but he attempted to get back together with the girlfriend to find out the truth, but by this point it was too late and Hatcher was able to deliver the famous line as she walked out the door.
