Prior to your breast augmentation, you will have several decisions to make regarding the details of your procedure, from the type of implants used to where and how they are placed. During your consultation, one of our experienced breast enhancement plastic surgeons will guide you through each choice, but it can be helpful to have an understanding of your options prior to your consultation so you can come prepared with any questions or concerns you might have.
Use this guide as a starting point to help you gain a better understanding of your breast augmentation options.
Breast Implant Types
There are two main types of breast implants: saline and silicone. While there are benefits to each type of implant, silicone implants are the most popular choice among many of our patients at The Natural Result. This is because silicone gel tends to have a more natural look and feel than saline and is less prone to rippling. However, advancements in medical technology have allowed saline implants to also offer a natural look.
The best type of breast implant for you will depend on factors like your personal preferences, how much natural breast tissue you have and your desired outcome.
Breast Implant Placements
Once you’ve selected the type of implant you want, you will discuss where the implants will be placed. There are two options: on top of the chest muscle (subglandular) or below the chest muscle (submuscular). As with breast implant type, there are benefits and drawbacks to each implant placement option as well.
Submuscular placement can offer more natural-looking results and reduce the risks of visible rippling and implant shifting, especially for women with smaller amounts of natural breast tissue. Subglandular placement, on the other hand, can provide more projection and can be a suitable choice for women with adequate natural breast tissue.
Breast Implant Incisions
Finally, one of our knowledgeable plastic surgeons will help you determine the best breast augmentation incision technique for your procedure. There are several options, though the inframammary incision is the most common. This technique places the incisions in the natural crease below your breasts, easily camouflaging them.
Other breast enhancement incision techniques include periareolar incisions around the lower half of the areolas and transaxillary incisions made in the underarm area. There is also an incision technique called the transumbilical incision (TUBA). These techniques are very rarely used.
