When diet and exercise aren’t enough, a tummy tuck can remove excess skin and fat from your abdomen to give you the tighter, leaner, healthier shape that you’ve always wanted. Traditionally known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck offers a way to recover your waistline after pregnancy or weight loss, or improve age-related changes in your body shape.

What to Expect
If you are troubled by fat deposits or loose abdominal skin but are in relatively good shape, you may be an excellent candidate for tummy tuck surgery. This procedure is often recommended as part of a mommy makeover for women whose abdominal muscles and skin have been stretched through one or multiple pregnancies. A tummy tuck can also improve poor skin elasticity in older patients.
Men and women who have succeeded in losing a significant amount of weight are often eager to reshape their abdomen. While a tummy tuck is a good choice for some, others may be candidates for a different type of mid-body surgery after weight loss. Dr. Kaufman will talk with you more about which option could be best for you.
During your tummy tuck consultation, Dr. Kaufman will explain what you can expect from the procedure. If excess fat and skin are concentrated in your lower abdomen, he may suggest a partial abdominoplasty (mini tummy tuck) instead, or discuss other alternatives. You’ll also be given instructions to follow before and after your tummy tuck.
Preparing for Your Tummy Tuck
Loose or separated abdominal muscles are tightened during a tummy tuck to create a firmer framework for your skin, which is redraped for a slimmer profile. While a full tummy tuck takes 2 to 4 hours to complete, partial abdominoplasty takes about half that time.
In many cases, Dr. Kaufman may recommend liposuction in addition to a tummy tuck to reshape and recontour the entire mid-body area, creating not only a tighter and more toned abdomen but also more definition along the hips and flanks. Combining these procedures into a single surgery is a safe approach that can minimize total recovery time.
Recovery & Results
After 10 to 14 days, you should feel comfortable enough to return to work. You can gradually return to more strenuous activity over the following 4 to 6 weeks. As any post-operative swelling from your tummy tuck diminishes, you should see an improvement in your abdominal contours, along with a more well-defined waistline.
